It ended with one last lap. The thousand or so people who stayed the entire night held hands and took one last walk around the track to symbolize that they would someday find the cure for cancer.

The Gwinnett County Relay for Life’s sixteenth annual event was held at the fairgrounds this past weekend, and the profits coming in from Saturday morning (May 8th) to the American Cancer Society had a grand total of 1.8 million dollars. The American Cancer Society predicted that they would have much more by the end of clean-up.

With over three hundred sixty-six teams participating and raising money, the event was enormous. Team GSMST had over fifty students come and had tons of fun at the event.

This was GSMST’s second year participating in Relay for Life.  The team was headed by Srta. D’Antonio as well as Ms. Easley this year. The team had many fundraisers that they held this school year from Hat Day to the Mr. GSMST competition and the “Wall of Inspiration.” Team GSMST raised around $6,000 in 2010.

This year team GSMST’s theme was “infinite Colors of Hope.”  It was all about having hope for the future of cancer research. People from all grades attended the event.  Many came to celebrate the lives of the people who have survived the disease. Relay for Life had many exciting events that many students participated in. Some of these were a Relay-styled Amazing Race, a Miss Relay Pageant, a flash-mob dance, and much more. Many fun-filled laps were also a part of this event like the Caffeine Lap and Birthday Hat lap in addition to the meaningful Survivors lap. The Luminary Lap was most memorable for students. Each person held a candle and walked in silence around the track once. There was live music all night from rock to country. It was one of the most exciting events all year, and the seventeenth annual is already in the planning stages.
