Prepare to have your mind blown, because on Tuesday, April 27th, 2010, the rapper B.o.B released his debut album: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Besides having the coolest cover art imaginable, The Adventures of Bobby Ray brings much to the table with numerous well-produced songs and strong hooks. B.o.B’s breakthrough number one hit, “Nothin’ On You,” has the hook of a pop-song, the background of a rock song, and the verses of a rap song. Bruno Mars accompanies B.o.B on the track and adds a fresh new style that makes the song especially memorable. “Nothin’ On You” not only made it to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, but also is the most frequently downloaded song on the iTunes weekly charts. However, the success of “Nothin’ On You” has done nothing to detract from the amazingness that is the rest of the album.

B.o.B’s ability to erase borders in the music industry is on full display throughout Adventures. Hayley Williams of phenomenal rock band Paramore lends her voice on “Airplanes.” The song has a beautifully written chorus that’ll shatter your thoughts. When I first heard Williams sing, “Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now.” I was paralyzed by her “siren’s song” voice.  Another rock star lending vocals on the album is Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo on the song “Magic.” The best thing about these collaborations is that they don’t feel forced. Unlike Lil’ Wayne’s Rebirth, which is in essence him screaming “Hey everyone, look! I’m a rapper doing rock!”, Adventures pushes boundaries like no other hip-hop album to date.

However, despite the collaborations with famous rock stars, B.o.B doesn’t appear as a sell out to his fans. The track “Bet I Bust” is proof that Bobby Ray can kill a mic with the best of them. Fellow Atlantians T.I. and Playboy Tre add verses on the song, and their metaphor-laced lyrics prove to “keep it real”. In the end, B.o.B remains his own man and will go on to make a huge impact in the hip-hop scene. Respect!
